Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Renosterveld fynbos

Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy: Preserving Nature and Thrilling Mountain Bike Trails

In the heart of the picturesque Cape Winelands, lies the Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy (BHRC). The non-profit organization is dedicated to the preservation and expansion of the critically endangered Renosterveld fynbos. With less than 5% of this precious habitat remaining in the Western Cape, the BHRC takes great pride in their efforts to protect 1500 hectares of this unique ecosystem.

To sustain their ongoing conservation initiatives, which include clearing alien vegetation, rewilding farmland, and creating natural corridors, the BHRC has found a unique funding source—their 130km mountain bike trail network. These trails traverse privately owned working wine farms and conservation areas, offering riders breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. Designed to cater to all levels of skill and expertise, the trails feature both jeep tracks and world-class single tracks, ensuring an exhilarating experience for mountain bike enthusiasts.

Established in 1992, the BHRC currently boasts a membership of 50 individuals who contribute to the cause by embracing sustainable farming and wine production practices. By adhering to the biodiversity guidelines set forth by the South African wine industry, these members actively promote the conservation of the region’s natural heritage.

Now, the MTB mid-year permit has been made available to the public, allowing riders to explore the stunning Renosterveld fynbos in its full glory from now until October. Additionally, holders of the annual BHRC permit gain access to the family-friendly Polkadraai Bike Park, a fantastic destination featuring a variety of tracks and amenities. The bike park caters to riders of all ages and skill levels, offering attractions such as a kiddie’s track, pump track, flow trail, skills trail, and fun line.

For those seeking day permits, various park and ride access points are available. These include the security kiosk at ASARA, the Bellevue Wine Estate tasting room, the Devonvale Golf & Wine Estate Pro Shop, the Fort Simon tasting room, the Babushka deli at Hazendal Estate, the Neethlingshof Wine Estate tasting room, the Cellar Door at Jordan, the Zevenwacht Wine Estate security checkpoint, and the Polkadraai Bike Park. Additionally, Engen Soneike, Shell Kruispad, and the security gate at Dwars in die Weg on Devon Valley Road are open 24/7 for added convenience. It’s important to note that access points operate on a cashless Zapper payment system, so be sure to come prepared.

The BHRC’s success in expanding its conservation and community development initiatives stems from strong collaborations with esteemed organizations like WWF Conservation Champions, Cape Nature, The Cape Leopard Trust, Conservation at Work, Cape Winelands District Municipality, and the Department of Agriculture. By joining forces, these entities enable the BHRC to make a significant impact in preserving the environment and fostering community growth.

This year, the Bottelary Hills MTB Trails have teamed up with the greater Wine Lands Permit, offering riders a choice between the local BHRC permit, which provides exclusive access to the BHRC trails, and the regional Cape Wine Lands permit. The latter grants premium access to a diverse range of trails, including those in A-Z Grabouw, Banhoek Conservancy, Boschendal, Bottelary Hills Conservancy, Elgin Valley, Franschhoek, Fruitways Farms, Grabouw, Helderberg, MTO Jonkershoek, Oak Valley, Paarl, Plaisir, Stellenbosch Trail Fund, Van Loveren, Wellington (Wild Boar & Scouts), and Wine Lands Cycling Club.

In summary, the Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy combines the dual delights of preserving the endangered Renosterveld fynbos and offering thrilling mountain bike trails. With their commitment to conservation and sustainable practices, as well as their partnerships with other prominent organizations, the BHRC is making significant strides in safeguarding the natural wonders of the Cape Winelands. Whether you’re a nature lover or a mountain biking enthusiast, the BHRC invites you to explore their trails and immerse yourself in the beauty of the Renosterveld fynbos.
