A Culinary Journey of Passion and Mentorship

Chef Adré Abrahams has had an inspiring journey in the culinary world, spanning over 18 years. Recently appointed as a chef lecturer at Capsicum Culinary Studio’s Cape Town campus, she sees this role as the culmination of her career. Hailing from Elsies River, Abrahams started her culinary adventure in a bakery, where she fell in love with baking amid the hustle and bustle of the kitchen.

Having worked in prestigious establishments like Radisson Granger Bay, Lagoon Beach Hotel and the Vineyard Hotel, Abrahams gained invaluable experience. However, her true passion lies in helping others, which led her to pursue a teaching role at Capsicum.
Her advice to aspiring chefs revolves around resilience, continuous learning, and seeing failures as learning opportunities. She emphasizes the importance of perseverance and a positive mindset in the challenging culinary industry.

For those considering a career in the culinary field, Abrahams stresses the need for passion, but also warns about the demanding nature of the job, which often involves long hours and sacrifices.

In a lighter note, Abrahams shares her fridge essentials, which include water, fruits, vegetables, and snacks for her children. She also reveals her favourite celebrity cook, Fatima Sydow, known for her authentic and warm approach to cooking.

Reflecting on current food trends, Abrahams notes a growing interest in health-conscious eating, particularly post-Covid-19, along with a rise in popularity of plant-based dishes, due to increasing environmental awareness.

As Abrahams herself puts it, “Never give up! Rome wasn’t built in a day, and everything takes time! It’s a tough industry, but it builds character and teaches resilience.” Her words encapsulate the spirit of perseverance and determination that has guided her throughout her career.
