A Celebration of Art and Community at Groot Constantia

A unique photographic exhibition by 171 photographers from 21 Western Cape clubs is currently being hosted by Groot Constantia Wine Estate in their tasting cellar. Having opened on 10 November, this remarkable exhibition will run until 31 December. This event marks the first time that so many clubs have collaborated to feature the works of numerous amateur photographers in the Western Cape.

Cape Town Photographic Society (CTPS), the first photographic club in Southern Africa founded in 1890, is hosting this exhibition on behalf of the photographic clubs in the Western Cape. Sixteen senior clubs from across the Western Cape responded to the invitation to showcase the work of their top photographers to the visitors to this popular tourist destination. In addition, five school clubs are participating.

Titled ‘Celebration of Photography’, this is indeed a celebration of the high quality of the work produced by the region’s club photographers. This year, instead of competing against each other in an annual Interclub competition, the clubs opted to work together to demonstrate to the public that photography is an art form worthy of being preserved and displayed on walls. Many of the works have won national and international awards.

The prints also illustrate the diverse genres and techniques club photographers have mastered. All photographic genres will be on display in colour as well as black and white – from landscapes, portraits, wildlife, birds, to virtual reality, fine art and many other genres.

The participating clubs meet in venues across the Peninsula and as far afield as Paternoster, Wolseley, Worcester, Kleinmond, Hermanus and Gansbaai, and all are united by the goal to promote the enjoyment of photography amongst members and to assist them with improving their photographic skills.

The school clubs operate under the auspices of senior club members, who assist them with mastering the art of photography. Several of the scholars have won awards and are also members of senior clubs.

The exhibition will be hosted in the wine cellar and tasting room of Groot Constantia – South Africa’s oldest wine estate and one of the most popular tourist destinations. It will open to the public on November 11th and run until the end of December. The venue is open daily between 9am and 6pm and entrance is free.
