Red Bull King of the Air returns to Cape Town for its highly anticipated 2026 edition. As the world’s premier extreme Big Air kiteboarding competition, the event offers top athletes and underdog riders alike the opportunity to earn a direct spot on the iconic main stage.
Video Submissions Now Closed
Video submissions for the 2026 event officially closed on 15 October, bringing an end to the global application window where riders submitted their best 60-second edits recorded over the past 12 months. Judges are currently reviewing the entries, evaluating candidates strictly on raw performance. Criteria focus heavily on massive height and amplitude combined with extreme technical execution, extreme kite angles, power, air control, and clean landings. Standard jumps and low-level freestyle tricks are disregarded.
Key Dates and World-Class Lineup
The successful video applicants will be revealed on 30 October 2026. These qualifiers will join wildcards and global contenders—including those earning spots through international qualifier events such as the Taiwan Qualifier—alongside defending men’s and women’s champions Lorenzo Casati and Nathalie Lambrecht.
Cape Town’s Iconic Weather Window
The main event takes place within a designated weather window running from 21 November to 6 December 2026 at Kite Beach, Bloubergstrand. Because extreme Big Air demands exceptional weather, organizers rely on Cape Town’s famous southeasterly wind—known locally as the “Cape Doctor”—and massive Atlantic swells. Rather than adhering to a rigid timetable, event officials monitor swell and wind conditions constantly; once optimal conditions align, a 48-hour yellow light notice is issued before giving the official green light for competition days.
Free Live Spectator Experience
When the action commences, Table Mountain will serve as the dramatic backdrop while the world’s most daring kiteboarders push the absolute limits of height and commitment. Spectators can attend the live event on the beach free of charge, making it one of the highlights of Cape Town’s summer sporting calendar. Fans worldwide can follow athlete announcements, live weather updates, and competition heat schedules at redbullkingoftheair.com.
