How Local Brand Ciovita Is Redefining Global Performance Apparel

Ciovita

Ciovita is leading a quiet revolution in athletic performance wear straight out of the creative hub of Woodstock. What began as an ambitious local venture has quickly evolved into a global competitor in high-performance cycling gear and accessories—proving that world-class technical kit doesn’t require a European import label.

During a recent facility tour, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer, highlighted local manufacturer Ciovita as a benchmark for innovation, craftsmanship, and export-driven growth.

Technical Precision Meets Local Craft

At its Woodstock headquarters, Ciovita employs 265 skilled staff members spanning design, pattern-making, precision cutting, and testing. Unlike many brands that outsource to distant manufacturing hubs, Ciovita keeps its entire operation under one roof. From race-ready jerseys and ergonomic bib shorts to weatherproof outerwear, gloves, and cycling accessories, every piece undergoes rigorous local refinement.

“When Ciovita was founded, we set out with the ambition of taking Woodstock to the world by creating cycling apparel that could compete with the best brands in Europe,” says Freddie Enslin, Commercial Director of Ciovita. “Today, the kit we produce stands shoulder to shoulder with the very best the global cycling industry has to offer. Our goal is simple: to take Woodstock to the world through world-class cycling apparel.”

Driven by Innovation and Global Expansion

At the core of Ciovita’s rapid rise is a relentless focus on innovation. Specialized cycling gear requires precise aerodynamic engineering, moisture management, temperature regulation, and high-durability fabrics designed for long hours in the saddle. By integrating advanced fabric technology with continuous rider feedback, Ciovita continuously updates its garment silhouettes and accessory lines to meet global standards.

This dedication to quality has fuelled rapid international expansion. Beyond supplying riders globally via direct e-commerce, Ciovita serves major markets across Europe, North America, and Australasia. The brand has also solidified its international presence as the Official Apparel Partner to the prestigious global Epic Series, outfitting premier mountain biking events such as the Swiss Epic and 4Islands MTB Croatia.

This culture of innovation aligns closely with broader regional initiatives. The brand is an active member of the Cape Clothing and Textile Cluster (CCTC), an industry coalition established in 2005 representing over 100 value chain stakeholders working to elevate local manufacturing competitiveness.

“Companies such as Ciovita embody exactly what the Cluster stands for: a commitment to innovation, world-class manufacturing standards, skills development, and export-led growth,” notes Courtney Grant, Chief Facilitator of the CCTC.

Strengthening the Local Creative Economy

The Western Cape remains South Africa’s premier destination for design-led apparel manufacturing, housing 158 clothing manufacturers and nearly 18,000 formal sector employees. The CTFL sector alone contributes 4.4% to provincial manufacturing gross value added (GVA) and accounts for 10% of manufacturing employment. These efforts directly support the Western Cape Government’s Growth for Jobs Strategy, which aims to drive private-sector-led job creation and export expansion.

“Ciovita is proof that Western Cape manufacturers can compete successfully through innovation, quality, and agility,” Minister Meyer stated during his visit.

Whether you are gearing up for a weekend ride through the Winelands or tackling steep coastal climbs, Ciovita’s journey offers a compelling reminder: world-class performance wear is being designed, engineered, and stitched right in our own backyard.
