Beyond the Whistle: How SA Deaf Rugby is Rewriting the Narrative of Belonging

SA Deaf Team 2023 Celebrates

In a powerful moment for modern sports culture, SA Deaf Rugby is redefining what it means to represent South Africa on the world stage with passion, purpose, and unyielding pride. In our nation, rugby is far more than a pastime—it is a shared heartbeat and a cultural anchor that unites people across all walks of life. Yet, true athletic brilliance isn’t always heard in the roar of a stadium; often, it speaks through the quiet determination of athletes playing for a cause far greater than victory itself.

In a landmark moment for inclusive sport, YesPlay has stepped forward as the Official Tier 1 Partner and front-of-jersey sponsor for the South African Deaf Rugby National Team. As the squad prepares to challenge the best in the world at the 2026 World Deaf Rugby Sevens Championships in Tokyo, Japan, this partnership highlights a powerful truth: resilience, passion, and excellence know no physical boundaries.

A Journey Driven by Grit and Heart

The story of the South African Deaf Rugby Association (SADRA) is built on unyielding perseverance. Making their international debut in Argentina in 2023, the national team captivated fans with a remarkable fourth-place finish, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal.

Now, officially awarded their national colors, the 16-strong touring party—comprising 12 elite players and four management staff under Head Coach Roelof Kotze—is set to depart for Tokyo on 28 October 2026. For these athletes, the tournament running from 31 October to 3 November isn’t just another competition; it’s a mission to step onto the global podium and bring home the medal they have worked so tirelessly to achieve.

Why This Matters for Modern Lifestyle and Culture

For a contemporary lifestyle audience, this moment extends far beyond traditional sports reporting. It touches the core of modern South African identity, where conscious living, community, and social purpose intersect:

  • Normalizing Inclusivity: The movement champions hearing awareness, integrates South African Sign Language (SASL) into mainstream culture, and supports vital community hearing screenings across the country.
  • Nurturing Grassroots Talent: YesPlay’s ambitious Sports Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme establishes a sustainable, nationwide development pathway to identify and mentor Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing talent from community levels up to international representation.
  • Inspiring Conscious Purpose: In an era where lifestyle is defined by how we uplift one another, this collaboration proves that corporate support can actively dismantle societal barriers and foster genuine equity in sport.

“We believe that the true power of sport lies in its ability to create opportunity, inspire hope and bring people together… It’s about investing in people, championing inclusion, and helping to build a future where talent, commitment and character, not circumstance, determine what’s possible.” — Tebogo Makamo, CEO of YesPlay

The Final Push to Tokyo

While YesPlay’s primary backing provides the engine for the Tokyo campaign, SADRA—a registered non-profit that remains largely self-funded—is still seeking a back-of-jersey sponsor to clear the final financial hurdle.

As SADRA Vice President Lauren Terras reflected, the goal now is to “make magic on and off the field.” When our national team steps onto the turf in Tokyo, they carry the spirit of an entire nation—proving that courage doesn’t need a voice to resonate across the globe.
