Vula Environmental Services Transforms Fleur Park’s Coastal Dunes into an Award-Winning Asset

The restoration of Fleur Park in Gordons Bay by Vula Environmental Services stands as a powerful example of how a dynamic coastal dune system can be turned from a severe public hazard into a long-term ecological asset.

The site originally functioned as an unstable dune field situated between Main Beach and Crystal Beach. Encroachments of invasive alien vegetation combined with the severe 2018 drought caused widespread vegetation die-back. These volatile conditions left behind a tall, overgrown, mobile dune that routinely buried nearby homes in sand, blocked public access, and created significant safety and security risks for local residents and beachgoers.

A Masterclass in Dune Re-Profiling and Rehabilitation

The success of the project at Fleur Park was not a simple planting exercise, but a carefully controlled and thought-out management plan. Vula Environmental Services used principles proven at Hout Bay beach and other coastal sites, then adapted them to Fleur Park’s narrow footprint, short beach exposure, and very strong Gordons Bay winds.

The approach combined earthworks, dune re-profiling, wind nets, irrigation, fencing, search and rescue of plant material, and phased revegetation to shape the dune profile and control where sand would move. The success of these methods was acknowledged by The South African Landscapers Institute (SALI), who awarded the Fleur Park site the SALI Trophy and a Platinum Award for the Best Environmental Landscape Work of 2026. This follows similar prestigious recognitions received by the company, including the SALI Shield for the Best Overall Project in 2020 for the Hout Bay beach site and the Rand Water Trophy for the Best Waterwise Entry.

Lasting Community and Ecological Impact

The benefits in Gordons Bay are now apparent to the community: the site is safer, more usable, and better protected from sand movement. For the environment, dune vegetation is now well established, the coastline is more stable, and ongoing maintenance costs are very manageable. For science and practice, Fleur Park has become an important living case study in coastal and environmental management, helping shape work throughout the province.
