Plettenberg Bay erupted with vibrant energy as the 5th annual Plett Ocean Festival brought ten days of marine conservation, surf culture, and coastal family fun to the Garden Route. Running from 3 to 10 July 2026, the milestone event drew nature lovers and holidaymakers into a bustling celebration of the region’s marine life. Capitalizing on a stellar whale-watching season, the festival seamlessly blended high-octane adventure with ecological education.
Art, Ecology, and Exploration Collide
Festivalgoers enjoyed a diverse lineup featuring 13 daily activities and 20 specialized events. Attendees danced for ocean conservation at Deep Blue Vol. 2, participated in collaborative sand sculpting, and explored ocean-themed art exhibitions.
For outdoor enthusiasts, guided excursions offered rare insights into the local ecosystem. Highlights included a Robberg hike led by the Plett Shark Spotters, a Lagoonloper naturalist walk along the Keurbooms Estuary, behind-the-scenes penguin rehabilitation tours at Tenikwa, and a popular pelagic birding trip. Coastal action peaked on the water with the high-octane Plett Winter Surf Fest and a dedicated scuba diving reef clean-up.
Deep Dives at the Marine Science Symposium
A central pillar of the festival was the Plett Marine Science Symposium, supported by TAVCOR Motor Group. Held at the Beacon Island Resort, the symposium featured an impressive lineup of leading scientists and conservationists delivering 27 talks across nine sessions. Returning for her fifth year, charismatic MC Zandile Ndhlovu—affectionately known as “Zandi the Mermaid”—guided discussions on ocean accessibility, marine health, and local species.
Key presentation topics ranged from the elusive Cape clawless otter and seahorse habitats to submarine canyons and the concept of “blue health.” A standout moment was the presentation by the celebrated Alexforbes ArchAngel crew, who captivated the audience with their triumphant journey in the Cape2Rio yacht race. Off-stage, visitors engaged with interactive Virtual Reality displays hosted by the South African Polar Research Institute and sensory exhibits by Eco Explorers.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Empowering local youth remained a core mission throughout the festival. Sponsored by Checkers, the Plett ‘Ocean Aweh-ness Hub’ on Central Beach provided marine education and meals to 200 children from disadvantaged communities.
Meanwhile, the ‘Currents of Courage’ underwater workshop—a collaboration between the Black Mermaid Foundation, Adopt-A-Swimmer, and facilitator Sunlyn—introduced young learners and new adult swimmers to the underwater world, fostering confidence and a lifelong love for ocean conservation.

Festival Director Cindy Wilson-Trollip praised the overwhelming community support and warm winter weather that made the fifth anniversary a resounding success.
