In a brief pause to the familiar coastal view, the City of Cape Town will begin dismantling the final four rainbow-hued beach huts on the eastern side of the promenade next week. While regulars and photographers might briefly miss the classic skyline, locals can rest assured: this temporary farewell paves the way for a stronger, better-protected, and beautifully restored coastline.
Progress on the Promenade
The dismantling marks a major milestone in the comprehensive Muizenberg Beachfront Refurbishment Project, which commenced in February 2025. Aiming for full completion by December 2026, the overhaul remains firmly on schedule.
To date, contractors have installed approximately 60% of the precast step and promenade units. These structures serve a dual purpose: providing tiered beach access while offering vital coastal defense. Under normal conditions, most of these steps will remain buried beneath the sand, acting as an invisible shield against heavy seas. Meanwhile, concrete work for the Surfer’s Corner revetment is practically complete, with focus expanding to the parking lot near the railway line and surrounding landward landscaping.
Preserving Heritage While Adapting to Climate Realities

Once the four eastern huts join the four western huts removed in March, all eight will be replaced with brand-new, highly durable structures. The replacements will strictly mirror the original historic design and famous color arrangement.
Importantly, the upgraded promenade is being shifted approximately two metres inland. This strategic setback directly responds to climate change, rising sea levels, and severe storm surges, ensuring the new seawall protects infrastructure without eating into the sandy shore.
