West Coast Hidden Gem: Velddrif Emerges as a Property Hotspot

Velddrif

The Cape West Coast has long been a magnet for those seeking a slower pace of life, but as popular hubs become increasingly sought-after, savvy buyers are turning their gaze further north. The picturesque town of Velddrif, situated on the banks of the Berg River estuary, is rapidly transitioning from a quiet fishing village into a premier property destination. By balancing its authentic coastal character with significant growth potential, the town is attracting a new wave of residents looking for an alternative to the bustle of Cape Town.

A Diverse and Growing Market

Velddrif is currently in an enviable “early growth” stage. While many nearby coastal towns have seen property values more than double in recent years, Velddrif remains a relatively affordable location within a 145 km reach of the city. However, this window of opportunity is narrowing as demand from a diverse buyer pool intensifies.

According to Samantha Nel, an area manager for Pam Golding Properties in the Western Cape, the town offers a wide selection of real estate for its size, ranging from entry-level apartments and freestanding homes to luxury waterfront residences. While retirees and holiday-home seekers remain the dominant segments, there is a marked increase in younger professionals and families. This shift is supported by the town’s proximity to Vredenburg and Langebaan, which provide essential modern amenities including schooling and medical facilities.

Infrastructure Driving Economic Growth

The transition of Velddrif into a regional hub is being fuelled by major infrastructure investments. One of the most significant milestones is the construction of the new Carinus Bridge. Officially scheduled to commence in 2027, this project will enhance regional connectivity by linking the town more effectively to the West Coast peninsula, alleviating traffic and supporting long-term economic development.

In addition to improved transit, the town is awaiting the completion of the new De Drift mall. This commercial expansion is expected to serve as a major economic boost, positioning Velddrif as a central shopping hub for surrounding smaller towns and providing a level of convenience that matches its residential growth.

The Appeal of the “Fisherman’s Lifestyle”

Despite these modern upgrades, Velddrif has retained its “fishing village” feel. The local economy remains rooted in traditional industries: fishing, tourism, and salt production. The working harbour at Laaiplek and the town’s position on the “Crayfish Route” provide a sense of heritage often lost in denser developments.

Nature remains the town’s greatest asset. With the Port Owen suburb offering a marina and 3.5 km of waterways, and the estuary hosting over 350 species of birds, the lifestyle is deeply connected to the outdoors.

Strategic Residential Developments

As prime land becomes limited, new developments are shaping the town’s future. Pam Golding Properties highlights key projects like Harbour’s Edge, a lifestyle coastal estate near the harbour. Other developments seeing significant interest include Atlantic Sands and the Egret’s View sectional title scheme. These projects reflect a move toward secure, community-oriented living in a town that is clearly on the rise.
