Dust Off Your Lenses: Enter the 2026 Vergelegen Wine Estate Photo Competition

One of South Africa’s oldest estates is inviting the public to help document its timeless beauty. On 1 April, the 326-year-old Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West launched the fourth edition of its popular annual photography contest.

This year, however, there is a creative twist. In a departure from previous summer editions, the 2026 competition introduces an autumn window, requiring all photographs to be taken during April and May. Furthermore, all entries must be in black and white.

“This presents a unique challenge,” says marketing manager Caroline van Schalkwyk. “Photographers must rely on light, shadow, texture, and composition rather than color to capture the magic of the estate.”

Capture the Moment

From the dramatic mountain backdrops and historic tree-lined avenues to the intricate details of the seasonal gardens, Vergelegen offers endless inspiration. The contest features three judged categories—Camera, Smartphone, and Junior (16 and under)—ensuring that everyone from professional photographers to casual weekend visitors can participate. There is also a “People’s Choice” award voted for by guests at the finalists’ function later this year.

Vergelegen is again partnering with Orms Direct and Fujifilm to inspire local creatives. The collaboration includes guided photo walks on the estate, allowing participants to view the heritage site through a fresh lens and experiment with different techniques ahead of their submissions.

Entries are free, with prizes including high-end photographic equipment, estate vouchers, and premium wines. Whether you are capturing the silhouette of an ancient camphor tree or the mood of a quiet vineyard path, this is a chance to frame the essence of one of the Cape’s most iconic landmarks.
