“Golden Age” of rail. Leading this revival is Ceres Rail Company, an organization specialising in authentic, heritage-focused rail experiences across South Africa. By meticulously restoring vintage rolling stock and locomotives, they bring passengers closer to the country’s stunning landscapes, deep-rooted history, and the unique charm of small-town life. Their mission is to preserve the “soul” of rail travel for future generations, a vision that culminates in their newest flagship adventure: “The Mossel Bay Explorer.”
This premium six-day journey makes its inaugural departure from Cape Town on Thursday, 7 May 2026. Themed as a voyage where “The Soul of the Cape meets the Spirit of the Bay,” the itinerary offers a rare opportunity to witness the Cape’s shifting horizons through the panoramic windows of vintage observation and lounge coaches. Unlike flying or driving, the train allows passengers to truly feel the transition from city bustle to coastal calm.
The Luxury of Time: Onboard Hospitality
The Mossel Bay Explorer is a deliberate rebellion against the clock—an invitation to embrace “oorgenoeg tyd” (ample time). With no Wi-Fi to distract, the rhythmic click-clack of the rails becomes a meditative soundtrack as the tapestry of the Western Cape unrolls slowly beside you. This journey is designed for those who wish to actually take in the majesty of the landscape as it passes.

The sensory experience is elevated by premium onboard hospitality. For the caffeine aficionados, the train features a dedicated onboard barista for specialty coffees. For those looking to toast the setting sun, a fully stocked onboard bar offers local craft beers and premium spirits. To celebrate the region’s viticulture, curated wine tastings are integrated into specific segments, allowing passengers to sample world-class wines while the very vineyards they originated from glide past the windows.
The Six-Day Itinerary
Day 1 – Thursday, 7 May 2026
The adventure begins with an early departure from Cape Town, taking a scenic route via Worcester toward Swellendam. As the urban skyline fades, passengers are welcomed with a light breakfast and barista coffee. After a finger lunch served onboard and a day of relaxed sightseeing, the evening concludes at select Swellendam B&Bs with a catered supper and breakfast.
Day 2 – Friday, 8 May 2026
The journey continues through the scenic landscapes of Heidelberg and Riversdale. In Albertinia, a vintage steam locomotive is planned to join the convoy, providing a nostalgic atmosphere for the final stretch into Mossel Bay. A finger lunch is served onboard during the day, followed by an evening arrival at the coast. Guests then check into their four-star hotels for a three-night stay, with supper included.

Day 3 – Saturday, 9 May 2026
This is a free day in Mossel Bay for beaches, the Post Office Tree Museum, the casino, or golf. It is a day of complete autonomy, allowing travelers to soak in the coastal atmosphere at their own pace. Breakfast and supper are provided at the hotels, while optional activities are for your own account.
Day 4 – Sunday, 10 May 2026
Sunday features a late-morning steam departure along the coast to Great Brak River. The train hugs the shoreline, offering world-class views of the Indian Ocean crashing against the rocks. A relaxed buffet lunch is served at the iconic Oppi-Stasie restaurant, followed by a return to Mossel Bay. Breakfast and supper are provided at the hotels.
Day 5 – Monday, 11 May 2026
The return journey highlights the glorious Cape landscapes as the train travels back through the interior toward Montagu. A finger lunch is served onboard. Guests stay overnight in select establishments with a catered supper and breakfast.

Day 6 – Tuesday, 12 May 2026
Breakfast is enjoyed at the hotels before a morning transfer back to the train. The final leg of the journey features an onboard wine tasting and finger lunch as the “Explorer” winds through the scenic Cape landscapes and winelands. The journey concludes with an early evening arrival in Cape Town, marking the end of a premium six-day heritage adventure.
Practical Information & Booking

Please note that optional activities, additional bar purchases, personal insurance, and gratuities are not included. In keeping with the heritage experience, the vintage lounge and observation coaches are not fully air-conditioned and have no Wi-Fi; however, the mild May weather is expected to be ideal. While steam haulage is planned, it remains subject to operational conditions and availability; diesel locomotives will be used otherwise.

Due to the nature of vintage coaches, the train is not wheelchair accessible and requires passengers to manage steep coach steps and uneven ground, though assistance is provided. Special dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice.
