Woolworths Expands Healthy School Tuck Shop Initiative to Curro Century City

Building on the success of its Springfield Convent School pilot, Woolworths is proud to expand its commitment to creating school food environments that promote long-term wellbeing, with the launch of a brand-new tuck shop at Curro Century City in Cape Town.

A proven pilot shaping better school tuck shops

The Springfield tuck shop, which has run successfully for three years, has provided valuable insights into effective approaches for school tuck shops, from menu design to student and parent preferences. Through this initiative, Woolworths and Springfield have shared a commitment to supporting learners with thoughtful everyday choices, reinforcing a positive relationship with food from a young age and setting a higher standard for school tuck shop offerings.

Designing school food environments that support wellbeing

Drawing on these learnings, the new Curro Century City tuck shop has been designed from the ground up, with menus carefully curated in consultation with a registered dietician to ensure options support sustained energy, concentration and overall wellbeing. This approach recognises that fostering healthy eating habits in childhood plays a key role in learning, focus and long-term welfare. By making nutritious choices more accessible and visible, the tuck shop encourages balanced and realistic eating habits without removing the fun traditionally associated with school break-time treats. It also provides convenience for busy families, helping parents feel supported rather than pressured by making school-day food decisions.

“The Springfield tuck shop has been an important learning ground for our brand, helping us understand how school tuck shops can extend our responsible retail approach. Curro Century City represents an exciting next chapter, allowing us to bring the same evidence-based, quality-led approach to a brand-new school environment,” says Zaid Brey, Commercial Manager at Woolworths.

Woolworths will continue to take learnings from both tuck shops as it explores new school feeding programmes, applying these insights to uphold high standards and expand similar partnerships in the future.
