There is excellent news for acolytes of the Grootbrak Grabadoo, which sets off for the 22nd time on Wednesday, 31 December 2025. Departing from the Grootbrak Sports Grounds at 67 Long Street, the event continues its tradition of offering well-tested cycling and run/walk routes to suit every fitness level. However, this year, the festivities will carry on long beyond the finish line.
More Than Just a Race
The continued support of local businesses and individuals has enabled organisers to spoil participants with Grabadoo buffs (for the first 1,500 paid entries), medals, and magazines. These serve as keepsake reminders of an event that plays out in the scenic surrounds of Great Brak River—the pretty seaside village that forms an integral part of iconic Mossel Bay’s famous Route 12.
Post-Race Perks and Entertainment
“After last year’s Grootbrak Grabadoo, a post-event survey revealed that people are keen to stay on for some after-action satisfaction,” says race director Alewijn Dippenaar.
In response, organisers have arranged for adult cycling finishers to receive a complimentary Devil’s Peak Lager, while kids, runners, and walkers can quench their thirst with a cooldrink. These will be complemented by Spar boerie rolls for sale, alongside stalls offering coffee, pancakes, and other delights.
To heighten the festive atmosphere, beloved local singer Marius du Bruyn will entertain the crowds with renditions of Neil Diamond hits and other popular covers. “We’re pulling out all the stops to ensure this 22nd anniversary cements us again as one of the Garden Route’s best-loved family events,” says Dippenaar.
Routes for Every Athlete
The Grootbrak Grabadoo offers a 4.8km run/walk and mountain bike options covering 15km, 36km, 56km, and 75km. Long-range riders will set off at 06:00 to tackle some of the most picturesque tracks in the Southern Cape.

“Both the 56km and 75km cycle routes include the historic hamlet of Friemersheim and its surrounding forests,” Dippenaar explains. “Pretty farmland forms a backdrop to both the dirt tracks and tarred sections, while ‘The Big Dipper’ challenges even the fittest of riders.”
Community Heart and Safety
Safety is a priority, with marshals and clear signage marking sharp turns and descents. Beyond the fun, the event is a boost for the local economy, creating over 40 temporary employment opportunities.
This year, funds raised will benefit Firstcare Wildfire Support, Vorentoe Laerskool PTA, and House of Valor. Dippenaar also reminds families that kids under 12 enter for free, though they will have to wait until they are older to earn the official race memorabilia!
