InterContinental Relaunch A New Chapter for a Cape Town Legend

As the Western Cape prepares for the high season, one of its most cherished landmarks is set to welcome a spectacular new era. After nearly three decades of service, The Table Bay Hotel officially closed its doors on 15 February 2025 to undergo a major R1-billion transformation. On 15 December 2025, the hotel will reopen as the InterContinental Table Bay, Cape Town, following a major refurbishment that elevates its offering while preserving its signature warmth and hospitality.

This transition is formalised under a new franchise agreement with IHG Hotels & Resorts. Sun International will continue to manage and operate the property on behalf of the V&A Waterfront (Pty) Ltd. This strategic move secures the hotel’s future as a world-class destination, perfectly timed to serve travellers arriving curious and ready to experience the “Season of Living Fully”.

World-Class Views for World-Class Moments

The InterContinental Table Bay, Cape Town will feature 306 beautifully designed rooms and suites. Each offers breathtaking views of Table Mountain, the harbour, and the Atlantic Ocean, providing the perfect backdrop for capturing life’s big moments. Guests will continue to enjoy direct access to the vibrant V&A Waterfront, home to world-class shopping, dining, and entertainment.

The completion of this R1-billion project reinforces Cape Town’s status as a global leader in experiential tourism, giving travellers an elevated base from which to explore the city’s coastal vitality.

The Legacy of Oscar the Guardian

Amidst the grand transformation, a beloved golden landmark has moved on. Oscar the Seal’s statue was removed in February 2025 as construction teams began the massive renovation of the iconic Waterfront property. The statue will not be reinstated at the property, but Oscar’s story, which is integral to the property’s history, lives on.
The legend—about the seal’s unlikely friendship with a fisherman on the pier—is now beautifully preserved in a new book for children, Oscar!

Furthermore, Oscar’s descendants, his pups’ pups, still visit the jetty today to bask in the sun, continuing the family’s presence in the area and remaining a popular photographic attraction for visitors. As one chapter closes, a thrilling new one begins, ensuring this Cape Town icon remains the perfect setting for making memories that matter.
