XTERRA World Championship 2025

The South African flag flew high over Molveno, Italy, on Sunday, 28 September 2025, as Nadia van Wyk from Durbanville, Western Cape, was officially crowned the XTERRA Youth B (16-17) World Champion. Her phenomenal victory at the second annual XTERRA Youth World Championship is a landmark moment for South African off-road triathlon, underscoring the formidable talent emerging from the country.

Nadia delivered a confident and powerful performance on the demanding Sprint distance course (0.75K swim, 16.5K bike, 5K run), crossing the finish line in a winning time of 1:58:10. This secured her the gold medal ahead of France’s Maxine Puech and Hungary’s Boróka Zilahy. A grateful Van Wyk reflected on her success, stating, “I’m so thankful to my dad and my mom. XTERRA as a whole is amazing — the people are so kind.”

A Champion’s Journey: The Road to Gold

Nadia’s triumph in Italy is the culmination of years of dedicated training across multiple disciplines. While off-road triathlon is her current focus, her athletic background is rooted in endurance and technical skill, including mountain biking (MTB), duathlons, and traditional road triathlons.

Her consistent rise to the top echelon of youth multi-sport racing can be seen in her impressive list of confirmed achievements leading up to the world title:

African Championship Success: Earlier in the year, she achieved a significant victory at the CAC MTB African Continental Championships – XCO in the Junior category, highlighting her dominance on the continent’s mountain bike trails.

National Dominance: She is a consistent national champion, currently holding the prestigious titles of U23 SA XCO MTB Champion and SA Duathlon Cross Champion, a testament to her versatility across different codes. This record builds upon her earlier national success, including gold at the SA Triathlon Champs in 2021.

XTERRA Foundation: Nadia demonstrated her clear affinity and talent for the off-road format by winning the Youth 16-17 Triathlon at the 2024 XTERRA South Africa race, signaling her world-class potential a year prior to her global triumph.

Nadia’s background, spanning swimming, running, and her favourite, technical mountain biking, has given her the comprehensive skill set needed to conquer the rugged, muddy, and challenging trails of the XTERRA circuit.

Inspiring the Next Generation

As an athlete with the ultimate goal of representing South Africa at the Olympics, Nadia’s journey serves as a powerful source of inspiration for young athletes across the country.
