For the second year running, Hotel Verde has been awarded Africa’s Leading Green Hotel, a powerful achievement that showcases not only the hotel’s sustainability leadership, but Cape Town’s status as a front-runner in responsible, eco-smart tourism.

‘This award is a win for our city and a clear signal that Cape Town’s tourism offering is world-class, forward-thinking, and future-fit. Hotel Verde shows that luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand. They’re setting the standard and inspiring others to follow,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos.

Innovations in Eco-Friendly Hospitality

Hotel Verde scooped the award as a result of its eco-friendly practices that includes running on renewable energy, using advanced water-saving technologies and implementing a zero-waste-to-landfill policy. Guests can even generate power while cycling in the gym, participate in weekly Earth Hour events, and earn in-house rewards through eco-friendly behaviour.

It is also the first hotel in South Africa to achieve Net Zero Waste status and the first in Africa to receive LEED Platinum certification.

Boosting Cape Town’s Tourism Growth

To boost the city’s growing numbers by attracting more tourists, Alderman Vos aims to publish Cape Town’s new Tourism Development framework later this year. Part of that plan means creating specialised campaigns, increasing direct air connectivity, and forging global partnerships with cities and tourism companies.

At the same time, the strategy puts a premium on value-for-money for local businesses, job creation, and responsible tourism practices that protect our natural and cultural heritage.

‘Our aim is to grow tourism in a way that delivers real, lasting benefits for Capetonians. Hotel Verde is proof that this version is not only possible, it’s already happening,’ said Alderman Vos.
