South Africa is set to solidify its standing as a premier ultra-trail running destination, thanks to a newly expanded partnership between Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) and Summit Events. With the inclusion of two iconic ultra-trail races, this partnership will showcase the country’s breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Table Mountain and the Drakensberg Mountains.

The RMB Ultra-trail Cape Town, scheduled for November 22-24, 2024, will take runners through the challenging and rugged terrain of the iconic Table Mountain, a natural landmark that dominates the skyline of Cape Town. Following this, the RMB Ultra-trail Drakensberg, set for April 25-27, 2025, will allow participants to test their endurance against the steep and scenic trails of the Maloti Drakensberg, another one of South Africa’s most stunning heritage sites.

Trail Running and Tourism Boost in the Western Cape

“This partnership represents a significant step in positioning South Africa as a top destination for ultra-trail running,” said Alison Badenhorst, RMB Chief Marketing Officer. “The sport is rapidly growing, and we believe these events will draw international athletes while unlocking local talent.”

The economic impact of these events is expected to be substantial, particularly for Cape Town. The RMB Ultra-trail series is projected to attract thousands of participants from around the globe, significantly boosting tourism revenue in both the Western Cape and Drakensberg regions. Local hospitality businesses, restaurants, and other sectors are poised to benefit from the influx of international visitors, making this more than just a race but a driver of local economic growth.

Table Mountain: The Heart of the Challenge

Table Mountain’s towering flat-topped peak will serve as the perfect stage for this world-class race. Runners will traverse technical trails that cut through the mountain’s rocky terrain, offering dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Town’s cityscape, and the surrounding landscapes. The demanding course will test even the most seasoned athletes, pushing them through steep inclines and challenging descents, all while immersing them in one of the most biodiverse regions in the world.

Environmental Conservation in Focus

Both the Cape Town and Drakensberg events are committed to protecting the natural environments they showcase. “We’re not just running through these landscapes; we’re becoming stewards of them,” said Stuart McConnachie, representing Summit Events. The organisers have pledged to minimise the races’ environmental impact through strict waste management, the use of biodegradable materials, and partnerships with local conservation groups. These efforts will ensure that both Table Mountain and the Drakensberg remain pristine for future generations to enjoy.

A Global Stage for South African Ultra-Trail Running

The international exposure from these events will be invaluable. In addition to the economic boost, the RMB  and Drakensberg races will highlight South Africa’s capacity to host world-class sporting events, drawing adventurers and nature enthusiasts from all corners of the globe. These events also serve as qualifiers for prestigious international ultra-trail races, further cementing South Africa’s place in the global ultra-trail community.

“What sets these South African ultra-trails apart is the sheer diversity of the terrain,” noted McConnachie. “Runners will experience everything from technical mountain trails to expansive grasslands, all while being surrounded by unique flora and fauna. It’s this variety that makes the courses both challenging and unforgettable.”

Conclusion: A Landmark Event for Runners and the Western Cape

With Table Mountain as the heart of this partnership, Cape Town is poised to become a hub for ultra-trail enthusiasts. The RMB Ultra-trail Cape Town race promises to deliver an unforgettable experience, blending physical endurance with the stunning natural beauty of the Western Cape. The event not only reinforces South Africa’s position in the global ultra-trail calendar but also highlights the country’s potential for sports tourism and conservation awareness.
