Table Mountain Cableway will undergo its annual maintenance from Monday, 15 July to Sunday, 1 September 2024, and will re-open on Monday, 2 September 2024, weather permitting. This extended closure aligns with their scheduled maintenance, adhering to international standards.
For the first time since its 1997 revamp, a full cable replacement will be carried out, along with maintenance on the hanging and running gear as per Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) specifications. During this period, the Cableway, as well as all commercial and public outlets and operations at both the Upper and Lower Stations, will be closed to the public. This includes the shops, restaurants, and ablution facilities.
While the cable cars will not be operational, Table Mountain will still be accessible to hikers. Most of the routes and walkways will remain open, and visitors can still climb to the summit. However, the hiking trails directly beneath the cable path will be closed due to the extensive overhead work.
Hikers are advised to be cautious of changing weather conditions and prepare for the hike down the mountain as the cable cars will not be available. Those whose birthdays fall within the maintenance period can still collect their free birthday special ticket during September 2024 by presenting a valid SA ID document, driver’s license, or birth certificate with an SA ID number.
Cable Card holders with cards valid during the maintenance period will receive an automatic extension of seven weeks.
Despite the closure of facilities, hiking up and down Table Mountain is still permitted, but it is recommended to hike with a registered guide and adhere to safety guidelines.
