Embracing ‘Unbound’ Creativity and Culture at the Cape Town Art Fair

Cape Town Art Fair

Investec Cape Town Art Fair will be back in the new year to host its 11th edition, taking place from 16 – 18 February 2024 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). The fair takes on a new theme, Unbound, bringing together a diverse group of renowned exhibitors, including prominent galleries from around the world representing both established and emerging artists.

The 2024 edition sees the City of Cape Town play an even more significant role. For the first time, the fair breaks out into the city with a public programme playing off the fair’s theme, Unbound City, providing a platform to connect and interact throughout the city in the name of art, not only at the fair. Throughout the week, we will see a number of public events hosted across the city landscape by local museums and institutions including Zeitz MOCAA, Irma Stern Museum, Norval Foundation, AVA Gallery, Bo Kaap Museum and the Iziko South African National Gallery. Excitedly, Zeitz MOCAA’s second annual gala will now be hosted on 11 February 2024, really kicking off the art week.

The Gala serves as a very special gathering for rejuvenation through communal support to one of Africa’s most prominent art institutions.

In the educational section of the fair; Connect presents local cultural institutions that nurture and support artistic production in the region through exhibitions, artist residencies and workshops. The section aims to engage visitors by providing a window into the art ecosystem, offering interactive workshops, accessible merchandise, and educational resources.

The fair returns with the well-loved curated sections: Tomorrows/ Today, SOLO and the new GENERATIONS and Special Project on Ceramics. The theme of Unbound provides a platform for art to provoke curiosity and break away from traditional storytelling and social expectations. Tomorrows/Today provides a platform for emerging and underrepresented artists and acts as a forecast of future relevant practices and ideas.

A new section called GENERATIONS, curated by Natasha Becker and Amogelang Maledu, celebrates artists who are at different stages in their careers and instigates cross-generational conversations among them.

This year’s Special Project will be a curated section on Ceramics. Investec Cape Town Art fair will present a special project dedicated to a selection of Contemporary South African ceramic works, titled ‘Cabinet|Clay.’ We recognise the significance of ceramics as one of the oldest mediums.

In years past, clay and ceramic works have tended to be overshadowed by other art forms, however, more recently they have been embraced, enabling their emergence as a noteworthy and celebrated medium. This is evidenced through increased coverage in art publications and prominent placements in major exhibitions across galleries and museums.
