The City of Cape Town has recently committed to bolstering two of its hallmark events: the Wynberg Family Festival and the Cape Town Ladies Open. This development comes after the City Council green-lighted negotiations for three-year sponsorship deals with both events, covering the financial years 2023/24 to 2025/26.
The Wynberg Family Festival, previously known as the Community Chest Carnival, stands as a pivotal event in Cape Town’s community engagement efforts. This festival notably impacts the local economy and culture, attracting over 17,000 attendees in its most recent edition. Serving as much more than a mere entertainment venue, it acts as an essential platform for local entrepreneurs, artists, and organizations. Annually, the festival creates over 500 job opportunities in various sectors, including security, cleaning, and event management.
The festival’s significance extends to its role in fostering local trade and bringing together people from diverse backgrounds. Organizers of the festival are focused on expanding its reach, aiming to increase attendance to 25,000 people. This ambition underscores the event’s potential for growth and its importance in the local community. The implementation of multi-year agreements contributes to the festival’s stability and growth, ensuring continuity and the possibility of further development in the coming years.
The Cape Town Ladies Open, a prestigious professional women’s golf tournament, has significantly contributed to the recognition and development of women’s golf in South Africa. For over nine years, the tournament has been a fixture in Cape Town, attracting more than 70 golfers from over 20 countries. Its focus extends beyond economic benefits to the local area; it plays a crucial role in nurturing young female golfers, helping them transition from amateur to professional status. The City’s continuous support, along with other partners, has been instrumental in the event’s success.
The upcoming 2024 Cape Town Ladies Open is scheduled from 13 – 15 March at the Royal Cape Golf Club. Meanwhile, the Wynberg Family Festival is set to enliven Maynardville Park from 1 – 3 March 2024. Both events, backed by the City’s renewed commitment, are poised to make significant strides in their respective domains, enriching Cape Town’s cultural and sports landscape.
