Get ready to once again experience the magic of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s timeless classic, “The Sound of Music.” Pieter Toerien, in collaboration with Cape Town Opera, is bringing this beloved musical back to the stage in a much-anticipated revival tour, set to open at Cape Town’s Artscape Theatre from the 14 December 2023 – 14 January.
This revival marks a special occasion, as it is the 11th and final collaboration between the legendary lyricists Rodgers & Hammerstein. “The Sound of Music” boasts a treasure trove of iconic show tunes, including “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do Re Mi,” “Sixteen Going On Seventeen,” and many more.
The heartwarming narrative, based on the memoir of Maria Von Trapp, follows a young nun-in-training who becomes the governess to the seven children of the stern Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy into their lives. However, as the shadow of Nazism looms over Austria, Maria and the Von Trapp family are faced with a moral dilemma that will test their courage and unity.
Originally a stage sensation, “The Sound of Music” secured six Tony awards, including Best Musical. Its success transcended the theatre, becoming a five-time Oscar-winning film and the most successful movie musical in history.
Under the skilled direction of Steven Stead, this new production promises sumptuous sets, stunning costumes, and a soundtrack that will linger in your heart long after the final curtain falls.
