Prepare to be captivated by the splendour of South Africa’s natural heritage as the 18th annual SA National Parks Week approaches, scheduled from 16 – 24 September 2023.
SANParks is set to celebrate this event with renewed enthusiasm, extending its reach to weekends and inviting all to immerse themselves in the wonders of our national parks. Since its inception in 2006, the ‘Know Your National Parks’ themed National Parks Week has attracted over 691,418 day visitors, becoming a global movement.
Hapiloe Sello, CEO of SANParks, explains that this initiative aims to nurture pride in South Africa’s natural, cultural, and historical heritage, aligned with the vision of a ‘Sustainable National Park System Connecting Society’.
During this period, most of the 21 national parks will open their gates to day visitors, with a particular focus on local communities. It’s essential to note that while entry is complimentary, access to accommodations and tourist activities is not included. Some parks are extending the event to include two weekends, enhancing the opportunity for engagement.
Notable parks in the Western Cape, including Agulhas, Bontebok, Karoo, and Tankwa Karoo National Parks will be open from 16 – 24 September. Table Mountain National Park and West Coast National Park will welcome visitors from 16 – 22 September.
Beyond being an educational platform, SA National Parks Week has been instrumental in raising conservation awareness. Sello emphasizes the importance of national parks for sustainable conservation practices, cultural preservation, and community empowerment through job creation.
The heart of this initiative is to underline SANParks’ role as the guardian of South Africa’s natural legacy. Sello underscores the need for unrestricted access to kindle a sense of ownership and connection.
