This unparalleled expedition offers an extraordinary opportunity for 5 South African matric students to traverse the vast landscapes of Antarctica. Here, they will learn more about the realms of sustainability, ecosystems, and conservation.

At the heart of this adventure is the visionary explorer, Riaan Manser. His passion for the outdoors, environmental consciousness, and safeguarding our planet propels him to disclose this life-altering experience to the youth. With an unwavering commitment to fostering awareness and education, Manser is igniting a beacon of change, urging young minds to comprehend the significance of preserving Earth’s natural splendour.

The Competition

The gateway to this remarkable expedition rests upon a thought-provoking essay. Aspiring participants must articulate their understanding of sustainable packaging and its implications for their communities and the world at large. A concise narrative of 100 words or more holds the key to joining the Antarctica exploration team.

The top 5 winners will be part of an Antarctica exploration team. They will embark on a six day long all-inclusive Antarctic adventure. This includes all travel, accommodation, activities, clothing, and food costs. The winning students will spend the six days learning about the Antarctic, exploring its beauty, hiking, taking part in science experiments, participating in a litter cleaning initiative and more. Each moment promises to be an odyssey of discovery and growth, underpinned by an unwavering commitment to sustainability.

This competition is an open invitation to all Grade 11 students across South Africa. All entries need to be submitted by 30 September 2023 – an opportunity that beckons the visionaries of tomorrow to step forward and make their voices heard.

At its core, Matrics In Antarctica is a movement. It stands as an initiative meticulously crafted to inspire young South Africans, primarily those in matric, to ponder the implications of their actions on the environment. Supported by the Department of Basic Education, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, as well as other passionate sponsors, this movement kindles an understanding of the intricate relationship between our choices and the planet’s well-being.

The very fabric of Matrics In Antarctica is woven from the passion of one individual – Riaan Manser.  A trailblazing explorer, he bears the distinction of achieving four World Firsts in his adventurous exploits. These daring undertakings have endowed him with an innate comprehension of the world’s intricate dynamics and how climate change ripples across it. With unyielding enthusiasm, he imparts knowledge and raises awareness about environmental concerns.
