Sunday, 30 April, has been renamed Social Sunday at the 2023 HI-TEC Walker Bay Outdoor. Along with the mountain bike races, day two of the trail run and the open water swim events the HI-TEC Dash4Charity will provide a range of social events for the whole family. From a Pirate Walk to 10 metre sprint and a concert by Me & Mr Green, Social Sunday will be rocking all day.

After and alongside the serious races, like the HI-TEC Walker Bay Outdoor’s mountain bike and trail running events, the Social Sunday schedule mixes competition and fun. It is all for a good cause too, with a R15 000 prize purse up for grabs, the proceeds of the R10 on-the-spot entry fees go to local charities. The relaxed activities on the penultimate day of the 2023 festival will begin with a free beach yoga session, followed by a voluntary cold water plunge, at the Marine Tidal Pool. Then families can take part in a complimentary Pirate Walk along the cliff-top path, before getting involved in a few of the more competitive Social Sunday events.

The Amphitheatre will host activities all day on Sunday, including the HI-TEC Dash4Charity sprint, dance and hang contests. The Sprint to Donate race pits individuals against a 10 metre course and challenges them to post the fastest possible time. The Dance to Donate features a 360 degree camera and the winner will be chosen from those who upload their videos to social media, whilst also tagging @hitec_sa and @walkerbayoutdoor. Hang to Donate is a test of grip strength and endurance and requires contestants to hang from a pull-up bar for as long as possible. All three events feature a R10 entry fee per attempt and the proceeds will be donated to charities serving the Hermanus communities.

“The HI-TEC Dash4Charity events are a great way to have fun and give back to Hermanus,” event director Gerhardi Odendaal noted. “They’re as serious or social as you want to make them, but we’re sure there will be some people taking them very seriously as there is a R15 000 prize purse up for grabs! Then there’s a great new event for the seriously social runners too…”

For those more adept at downing beers than running fast the Beer Run is the race to take part in. Taking place on Social Sunday, and starting at 16:00 from Grotto Beach, the 7 kilometre 3 beer/cold drink Beer Run is the ideal preparation for the evening’s festivities, which are headlined by Me & Mr Green. South Africa’s premier party band, renowned for their covers of fan favourites, will kick off the entertainment before a pair of DJ’s will ensure the party continues late into the night. Social Sunday’s closing party is also free to attend for all HI-TEC Walker Bay Outdoor athletes, as well as everyone wishing to join in on the fun.

Though the wise are warned, the final race of the Big 6, the Sprint Triathlon takes place on Monday morning…
