The international magazine TimeOut has released its fifth annual listing of the world’s best cities, according to the people who live in them. Edinburgh, Scotland, takes the top spot, while Cape Town, Africa’s second-highest-ranking city, comes in just shy of the global top 10 at number 11.

Each year, the media company asks some 20,000 city-dwellers across the world, alongside its network of global editors, to pinpoint what makes their city great via a survey known as the Time Out Index. Time Out uses the resulting data to compile its global city rankings.

The goal, the magazine says, is to “create a global snapshot of city living, and point people in the direction of the places locals are really raving about”.

Cape Town is praised as a city with good food, culture, mountains and nightlife where you “can do it all”. It is hailed as especially perfect for outdoors types, thanks to its wealth of beaches and hiking trails. With 93% of locals describing the city as beautiful, it also ranks as the second-highest scoring for beauty in the world (number one overall, Edinburgh, also scored the highest for beauty with 95%).
