Onderkloof Estate is one of the world’s quaintest wine farms. Situated in the historical Stellenbosch wine region, the Onderkloof vineyards overlooks False Bay while embraced by the Hottentots Holland mountains. Hence the name Onderkloof which means “below the valley”. This dates from the 18th century when Dutch governor of the Cape Willem Adriaan van der Stel’s sheep grazed here.
In the 1990’s Beat Musfeld, a Swiss Project Manager, visited South Africa and fell in love with the country. His lifelong passion for fine wine inspired him to acquire Onderkloof. After grapes had been produced here for decades, Onderkloof bottled its first vintage in the new cellar in 1999.
In 2012 the owner’s son, Yves Musfeld, became Onderkloof’s winemaker. Yves studied viticulture and oenology at Geisenheim University, Germany, did his apprenticeship in Switzerland and was assistant winemaker at Casa Lo Alto, Spain and Clos Du Val, Napa Valley before taking the reins at Onderkloof.
Yves’ world class winemaking experience, Swiss perfectionism and elegant European instincts produces some of the finest modern classics. Today Onderkloof prides itself in a list of award winning wines: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, the Sir Lowry Red Blend, Sauvignon Blanc, Floreal Blanc de Blanc, Chardonnay and Rosé.
In 2017 Onderkloof Cabernet Franc was voted South Africa’s Best Value Red out of 1 700 wines by esteemed Master of Wine and international wine journalist, Tim Atkin.
